What is a VAT number?
A VAT number identifies a business for value-added tax. In the EU it starts with a two-letter country code (NL, DE, FR) followed by a national pattern: NL VAT numbers end in B01-style suffixes, German ones are nine digits, and so on. It is issued by the tax authority and is separate from the trade register number the same business also carries.
That separation trips people up: a business can be registered at the chamber of commerce yet not VAT-registered (small entrepreneurs, holdings), or hold multiple VAT registrations across countries. Verifying the pair, registration number plus VAT number, is the robust way to confirm who you are invoicing.
