This major group covers farms, orchards, greenhouses, and nurseries primarily growing crops, plants, vines, and trees (excluding forestry). It also includes sod farms and cranberry bogs, producers of mushrooms, bulbs, flower and vegetable seeds, and growers of hydroponic crops. Seeds for field crops are classified in the same industry as the crops grown for other purposes.
An establishment mainly engaged in crop production (Major Group 01) is classified in the four-digit industry and three-digit industry group that account for 50% or more of the total value of its agricultural sales. If no single four-digit industry reaches 50%, but two or more four-digit industries within the same three-digit group together reach 50% or more, the establishment is placed in that group’s miscellaneous industry. Otherwise, it is classified as a general crop farm (Industry 0191). Establishments deriving 50% or more of sales from horticultural specialties (Industry Group 018) are classified as 0181 or 0182 based on their primary activity.
