Their customers are armed forces, police and governments, as well as gun shops, hunters and sport shooters, under strict national licensing and export controls.
Our data comes from the business registers of 39 European countries, where weapon companies are classified under SIC codes 3482 (small arms ammunition), 3483 (ammunition, except for small arms), 3484 (small arms) and 3489 (ordnance and accessories, not elsewhere classified). In NACE, the European code those registers use, 3,394 of them (100%) sit in group 25.4 (manufacture of weapons and ammunition), part of division 25 (manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment).
