Nursing homes are residential facilities where nurses and care staff look after people who can no longer live on their own, from personal care and meals to medical attention. Residents are mostly elderly, places are paid for by families, local authorities, care insurance and health services, and the homes are run by private groups, non-profits and public bodies.
Our data comes from the business registers of 127 countries, where nursing homes are classified under SIC codes 8051 (skilled nursing care facilities), 8052 (intermediate care facilities) and 8059 (nursing and personal care facilities, not elsewhere classified). In NACE, the European code those registers use, 229,204 of them (59%) sit in classes 87.10 (residential nursing care activities) and 87.31 (residential care activities for the elderly), part of division 87 (residential care activities).
