Indian company data runs on two engines and a soup of identifiers. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs registry, MCA21, holds the company record, but you pay per document to pull filings and financials, and its move to a new portal in 2025 was bumpy enough that a professional body formally complained. Alongside it, the GST system has become a parallel, unusually rich data source that a whole sub-market of verification APIs is built on.

Then there are the identifiers: a company has a corporate number, its directors have their own IDs, and every business carries a tax number and a GST registration, with no single key tying them together. That fragmentation, plus a fast-growing fintech-infrastructure sector, is why India has both classic registry aggregators, four regulated credit bureaus, and a wave of modern KYB players. This guide sorts them out.

It ranks {count} providers on merit. We sell Indian business data ourselves, so our pitch sits in a marked box rather than at number one.

1. Tofler: the company-research standard

The go-to for researching an Indian company from its MCA filings, clean and widely used.

Founded in 2013, Tofler turns Ministry of Corporate Affairs electronic records into structured company reports, covering financials, directors, filings and charges on private and public Indian companies. It is a common first stop for supplier, customer and competitor due diligence, and its reports are the familiar way to read an Indian company without wrestling the registry portal directly.

✓ Why it stands out

  • Clean company reports from MCA data
  • Financials, directors, charges together
  • Well-established and widely used

⚠ Watch out for

  • Depends on what companies file with MCA
  • Pricing tiered, not fully public
  • A research tool, not a credit bureau

2. CompanyData

Full disclosure: where CompanyData fits in India

We publish this guide and we sell Indian business data, so here is our pitch in the open rather than dressed up as an objective first place. Our Indian file is large and built for volume work: enrichment, segmentation and cross-border lists, in the same schema we use for 200+ other markets.

India is a big file for us, over 30 million businesses with a phone number for a quarter of them. Where we are honest about being weaker: our named-contact rate is lower here than in some markets, reflecting how much of India's economy is small and informal, and we do not provide MCA-document retrieval, GST verification or the regulated credit scores the bureaus and KYB players specialise in. For registry filings, credit and KYB go to them; for reach across India and every other market in one format, come to us.

3. Zaubacorp: the free MCA lookup

The free-tier way to browse Indian company and director data, popular for quick checks.

Operated by Zauba Technologies, Zaubacorp publishes company details, directors and financials from MCA records, with a free-tier browse that is its main draw, alongside a sister site historically known for trade data. For a quick, no-cost look at an Indian company's basics and directorships, it is the convenient option, with paid documents for depth.

✓ Why it stands out

  • Free browsing of company and director data
  • Good for quick checks
  • Wide company coverage

⚠ Watch out for

4. Probe42: the lenders' data platform

The choice of banks and lenders for deep unlisted-company data, delivered by API.

Independent and privately held, Probe42 assembles hundreds of data points on millions of Indian companies and directors from hundreds of validated public sources, with particular strength in unlisted-company coverage, delivered through a self-serve portal and APIs. Banks and non-bank lenders use it for credit, risk and compliance, which is exactly where India's fragmented filings are hardest to assemble by hand.

  • Deep unlisted-company coverage
  • API-first, built for lenders
  • Hundreds of validated sources consolidated

5. TransUnion CIBIL: the credit-rank standard

India's oldest and largest bureau, and the CIBIL Rank lenders know by name.

TransUnion CIBIL is the oldest and largest of India's four RBI-licensed credit bureaus. Its commercial products, the Company Credit Report and the CIBIL Rank, built from lender submissions, are the reference for assessing a borrowing business's creditworthiness. For a bank or supplier weighing credit exposure to an Indian company, this is the standard, alongside the other three regulated bureaus.

✓ Why it stands out

  • The best-known Indian commercial credit rank
  • Data from lender submissions
  • RBI-regulated bureau

⚠ Watch out for

  • Most useful for borrowers with credit exposure
  • Reports are paid, tiered
  • US-parented

6. CRIF High Mark: the commercial credit bureau

A full-service RBI bureau, strong on MSME risk, and part of the CRIF group.

Licensed in 2010 and majority-owned by the Italian CRIF group since 2014, CRIF High Mark is a full-service Indian credit bureau. Its commercial products include a company credit report with a commercial credit score and an MSME rank, which is a genuine strength given how much of India's economy is small and medium businesses. A credible alternative to CIBIL for commercial credit, with an international parent behind it.

7. Perfios: the KYB infrastructure

The fintech-infrastructure heavyweight for verification, having absorbed Karza's KYB stack.

Founded in 2008 and now a unicorn, Perfios is India's financial-data-aggregation and verification heavyweight, and it acquired the KYB specialist Karza in 2022, folding in business due-diligence and onboarding tools. Its KYB stack runs checks across hundreds of official sources, MCA, GST, PAN and more, through one set of APIs, which is exactly what India's identifier fragmentation demands. The infrastructure layer beneath a lot of Indian fintech onboarding.

How India's data market took shape

India digitised its registry, built a GST data layer, and grew a KYB industry on top:

2010 · Three new credit bureaus licensed

The RBI licenses Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark alongside the older CIBIL, giving India four regulated credit bureaus.

2017 · GST creates a data layer

The Goods and Services Tax rollout creates a parallel, rich data source that a whole sub-market of verification APIs is built on.

2022 · Perfios acquires Karza

Perfios buys the KYB specialist Karza, consolidating India's business-verification infrastructure under one roof.

2025 · MCA moves to V3, bumpily

The legacy MCA portal is shut and filings move to the new V3 system, whose technical troubles prompt a formal complaint from a professional body.

The Indian data landscape

The registry aggregators and KYB players are Indian; the credit bureaus mostly answer to global groups:

Indian-owned

  • Tofler
  • Zaubacorp
  • Probe42
  • Perfios (and Karza)

Indian brand, foreign owner

  • TransUnion CIBIL (TransUnion, US)
  • CRIF High Mark (CRIF, Italy, since 2014)
  • Experian India (Experian)
  • Equifax India (Equifax, US)

One registry, many identifiers

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs registry, MCA21, is where Indian companies file, and while master data such as the corporate number, directors and status is partly open, the actual documents and financials are paid per view. The registry's 2025 migration to a new portal was troubled enough to draw a formal complaint over failed filings, a reminder that the official source is not always smooth to work with.

The bigger challenge is fragmentation. A company has a corporate number, its directors have separate IDs, and every business carries a tax number and a GST registration, with no single key linking them, and GST has itself become a rich parallel data source. That is why India's providers exist: to consolidate the identifiers and filings, and to verify them. Check the registry here:

  • MCA21 : The Ministry of Corporate Affairs registry. Master data partly open; documents and financials paid per view.
  • GST portal : The GST system, a parallel and unusually rich data source that many verification APIs build on.
  • GSTIN verification : GST registration lookup, the basis of a whole sub-market of Indian KYB verification tools.

Four questions before you sign anything

1. Do you need filings, credit, or verification? Three different buys. For MCA filings and company research, Tofler, Zaubacorp or Probe42. For a credit score, the RBI bureaus. For onboarding checks across MCA, GST and PAN, a KYB platform like Perfios.

2. Listed, unlisted, or the informal tail? Coverage thins as you go down. Listed and larger private companies file useful data; the vast small and informal segment files little. Providers strong on unlisted coverage, like Probe42, matter if that is your market.

3. Is GST your real key? For verifying operating businesses, especially smaller ones, GST data is often richer and fresher than MCA filings. If your use case is vendor or merchant verification, prioritise providers with strong GST coverage.

4. Are you keying on the right identifier? With separate corporate, director, tax and GST numbers and no single link, decide early which identifier you match on, and pick a provider that resolves across them cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

Partly. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs registry, MCA21, makes master data such as the corporate number, directors and status partly open, but you pay per document to pull actual filings and financials. The GST system is a separate, rich data source used heavily for verification. So basic identity is accessible, but filings, credit scores and verification are what you pay providers for, and the registry's recent portal migration has been bumpy.
There are exactly four, all licensed and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India: TransUnion CIBIL, the oldest and largest, plus Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark, all licensed around 2010. Each offers commercial credit products alongside consumer ones. For assessing an Indian business's creditworthiness, CIBIL's Company Credit Report and Rank are the reference, with CRIF High Mark notably strong on MSME risk.
It is the wave of fintech-infrastructure companies building verification and onboarding APIs on top of MCA, GST, PAN and Aadhaar data. Players like Perfios, which absorbed the KYB specialist Karza in 2022, plus Signzy, IDfy and others, let banks and fintechs verify a business across hundreds of official sources through one set of APIs. It exists because India's identifier fragmentation makes manual verification painful, and it is one of the more dynamic parts of the market.
No. Despite occasional confusion, Probe42, the Bengaluru company-data platform used by banks and lenders, is independent and privately held, with founders and funds on its cap table. It is strong on unlisted-company data delivered by API. If a comparison states it was acquired by a ratings agency or anyone else, that is unverified, so treat Probe42 as an independent provider.
Because they solve a different problem. The global sales-intelligence platforms are strong on contact data but hold thin authoritative Indian coverage and take little from MCA or GST. For registry filings, credit decisions and KYB verification in India, the providers on this page, from registry aggregators to the RBI bureaus to the KYB platforms, are far ahead.
