What is this Canada business registry search?
This tool searches 4.2 million Canadian businesses by name or registration number, across federal incorporations and the provincial registries, and returns the registered record with address, entity type, industry classification, status and, where available, employee counts and revenue.
Canada splits registration between Corporations Canada (federal) and thirteen provincial and territorial registries, each with its own search. One query here covers them all at once, which is exactly what you need when you do not know where a counterparty happens to be registered.

How does business registration work in Canada?
A Canadian business can incorporate federally under the Canada Business Corporations Act, which protects its name nationwide, or provincially, which is simpler and cheaper but limits the name to that province. Most small businesses register provincially; businesses operating across provinces often hold a federal incorporation plus extra-provincial registrations.
On top of that, the CRA issues a 9-digit Business Number (BN) for tax, payroll and GST/HST accounts. When verifying a Canadian counterparty you may encounter a corporation number, a provincial registry number and a BN; this search accepts the name when the numbers are unclear.
