Companies House publishes the register for free, but its data product carries no telephone number, no email address and no turnover, and you cannot select part of it. Companies House publishes the whole register for free. The Free Company Data Product is a monthly ZIP of CSV files covering every live company, and it is refreshed within five working days of each month end. What you get is the register: company number, registered address, status, incorporation date, SIC code, filing dates and basic charge information. For checking a company, that is exactly right, and it is hard to argue with free.
Where it stops is the moment you want to do something with it. There is no telephone number, no email address and no turnover in that file. Directors sit in a separate download rather than next to their company. Accounts data only exists for electronically filed accounts, roughly 60% of the 2,2 million filed each year. And you cannot ask for a slice: it is the entire register or nothing, so selecting construction firms in Yorkshire with more than ten staff is work you do yourself, after the download, with no support to fall back on.
Our file starts from that same register and adds the fields it leaves out. Of the 8,826,119 UK companies in it, 2,680,534 carry a telephone number, 1,290,892 a business email address, 2,650,020 a website and 6,297,745 a named director. You select by SIC code, region, company size or revenue and take the result as Excel, CSV or through the API.
