Argentina Company Register: How to Search the IGJ and Verify Argentine Companies (2026)

Argentine companies register where they are domiciled, so no single registry holds every company's file. The registry for Buenos Aires City, the Inspección General de Justicia, has no public company search: its only online lookup follows the status of filings. What the country does have is a free national index, the Registro Nacional de Sociedades, which you can search by name or tax ID, plus free open data and a tax ID check at the tax agency. This guide covers 2,335,779 Argentine entities: how to find one with those official sources, what IGJ copies and certificates cost, and how to verify an Argentine company step by step.

1. What is the Argentine company register?

Argentina is a federal country, and its company register follows suit. The General Companies Law (Ley General de Sociedades 19.550, from 1972) requires a company's founding documents and every amendment to be registered in the Registro Público of its registered domicile. No single registry holds every company's file: where a company is seated decides which registry does.

For Buenos Aires City, that registry is the Inspección General de Justicia (IGJ, the General Inspectorate of Justice), part of the national Ministry of Justice and founded in 1893. Under its organic law, Ley 22.315 of 1980, IGJ keeps the Registro Público, registers commercial companies and their amendments, and supervises share companies, foreign companies operating in Argentina, civil associations, and foundations. It also registers and supervises capitalisation and savings companies across the whole country.

One exclusion in that law matters in practice. IGJ does not supervise share companies that are under the Comisión Nacional de Valores (CNV), the securities regulator. Their amendments are still entered in IGJ's register automatically, and the CNV publishes what they file with it: YPF's issuer page shows a list of authorities filed on 9 September 2026 and board minutes from 17 September 2026.

What the country does have is a national index. The Registro Nacional de Sociedades (RNS, National Register of Companies), run by the Ministry of Justice under Law 26.047, centralises data on private legal persons registered in any province or in Buenos Aires City: Argentine and foreign companies, civil associations, and foundations. Its data comes from ARCA, the national tax and customs agency, and it identifies every entity by its CUIT. Its free search has been online since May 2019. It does not replace the registration in each jurisdiction, and it holds no filed documents.

SystemWhat it holdsAccess
Registro Nacional de Sociedades argentina.gob.ar/justicia/registro-nacional-sociedadesLegal persons registered anywhere in Argentina, from ARCA data: name, legal type, contract date, activities, fiscal and legal addressFree search by name or CUIT, plus a monthly CSV file (CC BY 4.0)

ARCA tax registration seti.afip.gob.arCUITs with their name and their income tax, VAT, monotributo, and employer statusFree, one CUIT per CAPTCHA or as a bulk file
CNV issuer pages cnv.gov.arFilings of companies in the public offering regime: financial information, board minutes, lists of authorities, relevant factsFree, no login

IGJ is in the middle of going digital. Since 10 August 2026 registered documents come back as digitally signed files through TAD instead of on paper, although the filings covered by that change are still lodged in person at IGJ's front desk by appointment. A new platform, S.O.D.A., created by General Resolution 7/2026, now takes balance sheet filings online. None of it has added a public company search.

3. What data is public and what it costs

IGJ prices everything in modules, a unit whose value the Ministry of Justice sets by resolution. Since 8 April 2024 one module has been ARS 1,500 (Resolution 33/2024). Every document IGJ issues about a company is paid. The RNS search, both open datasets, and the checks at ARCA, the Boletín Oficial, and the CNV cost nothing.

The small print matters. Each copy request covers up to 100 pages, and you pay another form for every further 100. Only one set of financial statements can be ordered per request, and you need its closing date. The urgent procedure is only available for commercial companies whose correlativo is above 1,000,000.

Two rules shape what you can actually get. First, not every company files accounts with the register. Under article 67 of the General Companies Law, share companies send their financial statements to the supervising authority, but an SRL only has to send them to the register once its capital reaches the article 299 threshold, which the Ministry of Justice set at ARS 2,000,000,000 in February 2024. Second, the open data does not contain the figures. Its balance sheets file lists the closing date, the filing date, and the capital reported, and nothing else.

What you will not find in IGJ's output or the RNS: revenue as a field, employee counts, phone numbers, or email addresses. The RNS does carry ARCA's activity codes, but the figures exist only inside the filed statements, one paid copy and one financial year at a time.

5. How to verify an Argentine company: a practical checklist

  1. Confirm the name, the legal form, and the CUIT

Search the CUIT on the invoice in the Registro Nacional de Sociedades and check that the name and legal type match the contract. For a Buenos Aires City company, also find it in IGJ's open data. There the CUIT has only been reported since February 2018 and is not filled on every row, so a blank on its own is not a red flag. For a quick first pass, our free company lookup finds the registration and revenue data in one search.
  2. Check the tax registration at ARCA

Run the CUIT through the Constancia de Inscripción, or look it up in ARCA's tax condition file, which lists the name and the income tax, VAT, and employer status per CUIT. A CUIT that is missing or carries another name is a warning sign, and this check works for companies in every province.
  3. Make sure you are looking in the right registry

IGJ only holds companies domiciled in Buenos Aires City. The legal address in the RNS tells you which jurisdiction holds the file, and if it is a province, the company file sits in that province's Registro Público. If IGJ's open data marks the entity with dada_de_baja, read the reason in detalle_baja before you treat the company as gone: a company that moved its domicile is registered where it moved to.
  4. Check who may sign

The authorities file lists names, the role, and the identity document, but no appointment dates, so it cannot tell you who is in office today. For that, order the copy of the articles, amendments, latest appointment of authorities, and latest registered address (6 modules), and check that the person signing is on it.
  5. Read the notices in the Boletín Oficial

SAs, SRLs, and SASs must publish a notice when they incorporate, amend their articles, or dissolve. For SAs and SRLs the incorporation notice includes the registered domicile, the capital, the members of the management and supervisory bodies, and the financial year end. The second section of the national Boletín Oficial carries notices of this kind, with separate subsections for each of the three types.
  6. Check the filed accounts

Order the report of filed balance sheets (5 modules) to see which years were filed, then a copy of the most recent set (6 modules). For a company in the public offering regime, go to the CNV instead: YPF's issuer page lists its filings free, including a list of authorities filed in September 2026 and its board minutes, and filters them by type, financial information included.
  7. Ask the counterparty for a CEVIP

IGJ's certificate service is aimed at commercial companies and civil entities themselves, and before requesting a CEVIP (certificado de vigencia y pleno cumplimiento) the company must be up to date with IGJ, including its term, its fee payments, and its balance sheet filings. Asking for a recent one makes the company prove its own standing.

6. Limitations of the official register

To be fair to the Ministry of Justice: the RNS search is free, and both open datasets are free to reuse under a CC BY 4.0 licence. The limits show up the moment you need more than a company's tax registration:

  • No company search at IGJ. IGJ's site has no company profile to look up. When we tried YPF, the IGJ home page offered no company search, and the one lookup IGJ runs is a filing-status tool, which it offers for following procedures filed at its offices.
  • The national search is tax data only. The RNS shows what ARCA holds: name, legal type, contract date, activities, and addresses. It has no filings, directors, or accounts, and its local registration number is filled only when available. YPF's row in the September 2026 file has none.
  • One city, not one country. IGJ covers companies domiciled in Buenos Aires City. Companies seated in the provinces are registered with their own province.
  • Every document needs an Argentine login. Copies, certificates, and reports are ordered through TAD with an ARCA tax key, and some of them also accept a Mi Argentina account. TAD's one route for non-residents, through NIC Argentina, is for internet domain procedures.
  • IGJ's open data is thin where it matters. The CUIT has only been reported since February 2018 and is not filled on every row, the authorities file has no appointment dates, and the balance sheets file holds dates and capital but no figures.
  • Listed companies are supervised elsewhere. IGJ does not supervise share companies under the CNV. For those, the CNV's free issuer pages are the place to look: YPF's lists financial information, board minutes, and lists of authorities.
  • Many SRLs file no accounts with the register. Under article 67 of the General Companies Law, an SRL below the article 299 capital threshold of ARS 2,000,000,000 does not have to send its financial statements to the register.
  • The archive is moving. IGJ warns that consulting archived files may be delayed while its General Archive is relocated, centralised, and digitised.
  • The CUIT check is one at a time. ARCA's lookup takes one CUIT per CAPTCHA. The bulk file covers tax status only, and ARCA notes that it leaves out taxpayers who have not yet updated all their economic activities.

If you check one Argentine supplier a quarter, an RNS search and a CUIT check will do. If you onboard hundreds across several provinces, it is the whole problem.

7. Access IGJ data programmatically

CompanyData maintains a normalized database of all 2,335,779 Argentine entities, built from official sources and refreshed as new data appears. Instead of one search at a time, CSV files for one city, and a CAPTCHA per tax ID, you get every record in one place, enriched with revenue, employees, and contact data that the official sources do not publish.

Our Company Data API lets you look up any Argentine entity by CUIT, name, or address and get structured JSON back in real time, with 150 free lookups to start and no TAD login required. It is used by developers, banks, and insurers across 190+ countries, so Argentine checks work exactly like checks anywhere else.

Example: look up a company by name

GET /v1/companies?country=AR&name=YPF

We show the request line only. IGJ has no company search, so our attempt to pull YPF's record from the register produced no record and no registration number, and we do not print values we have not seen on the register. Run the request with your free lookups to see the full record. Revenue, employees, and contact data come back on the same record where we hold them: neither IGJ nor the RNS publishes them.

8. Argentina vs other company registers

Argentina offers a free national search, but only of tax registration data. The company files themselves sit with IGJ or a provincial registry, and IGJ sells every document. For context:

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Argentina Inspección General de Justicia (IGJ).

Partly. The national Registro Nacional de Sociedades (RNS) lets anyone search legal persons by name or CUIT free, with tax registration data supplied by ARCA. IGJ, the registry for Buenos Aires City, has no public company search but publishes free open data on its entities, and ARCA lets anyone check a CUIT free behind a CAPTCHA. Documents are paid in IGJ modules of ARS 1,500: a copy of one set of financial statements is 6 modules and a certificate for a share company 12 modules.
There is a national index, not a national file. The Registro Nacional de Sociedades (RNS), run by the Ministry of Justice under Law 26.047, centralises data on legal persons registered in every province and in Buenos Aires City, and you can search it free by name or CUIT. Its data comes from ARCA, and it does not replace registration in each jurisdiction: under the General Companies Law a company registers in the Registro Público of its registered domicile, which is IGJ for Buenos Aires City. The one identifier that works nationwide is the CUIT, the tax ID issued by ARCA.
The Inspección General de Justicia, part of the national Ministry of Justice and founded in 1893. It keeps the Registro Público for Buenos Aires City, registers and supervises the companies and civil entities domiciled there, and supervises capitalisation and savings companies across the whole country. Its organic law is Ley 22.315 of 1980.
Eleven digits. ARCA's lookup and the RNS search take them without hyphens, and the CNV writes YPF's with them: 30-54668997-9. IGJ also gives each entity a número correlativo, its own sequence number, which you need when you order documents.
We found no company API from IGJ or the RNS. The nearest things are two open datasets on datos.jus.gob.ar, both under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence and listed as updated monthly: the RNS file of legal persons nationwide, and IGJ's five CSV files for Buenos Aires City. ARCA adds a free bulk file with the tax status of registered CUITs. For direct structured access, use our Company Data API.
No. IGJ's pages, forms, and procedures are in Spanish, and so are the RNS search form and the open data column names, such as numero_correlativo and razon_social. Legal forms appear as their Spanish abbreviations: S.A., S.R.L., SAS.
Often, but not always. Share companies send their financial statements to the supervising authority, while an SRL only has to send them to the register once its capital reaches ARS 2,000,000,000. In Buenos Aires City you order a copy from IGJ through TAD, one financial year per request, for 6 modules. For companies in the public offering regime, the CNV publishes financial information free on its issuer pages. For statements at scale, see our Argentine company records with financials.
IGJ's open data lists authorities and partners by name with their identity document, but without appointment dates. For the current board, order IGJ's copy of the articles, amendments, latest appointment of authorities, and latest address, for 6 modules. Incorporation notices in the Boletín Oficial name the first members of the management bodies, and for companies in the public offering regime the CNV issuer page carries a list of authorities, as YPF's does.
IGJ only holds entities domiciled in Buenos Aires City. Companies seated in a province are registered there, and a company that moved out of the city is registered in its new jurisdiction; IGJ's open data gives the reason for any removal in its detalle_baja column. Search the name or CUIT in the RNS instead, which covers the whole country, and use the legal address it shows to find the registry that holds the file.
Both open datasets are listed as updated monthly. At the start of October 2026 IGJ's latest update was the one published on 7 August 2026, with data to 31 July 2026, and the RNS file had data to 18 September 2026. The RNS notes that changes to a CUIT made before 13 November 2018 do not show in its search. IGJ also warns that access to archived files may be delayed while its General Archive is moved and digitised.
