Sweden Company Register: How to Search the Bolagsverket Register and Verify Swedish Companies (2026)

Sweden gives every company one organisation number, lets anyone search the register free in Swedish or English, and gives away basic data on its companies and associations in a weekly file. Then the free part stops. The public record shows a name, an address, a legal form, and a registration date, while the board and the signatories are sold on a certificate or kept behind an e-ID login, and most annual reports cost SEK 75 each. This guide covers 1,850,173 registered entities: how to search them, what each document costs, and how to verify a Swedish company step by step.

1. What is the Swedish company register?

Strictly speaking, Sweden has no single company register. Bolagsverket, the Swedish Companies Registration Office, keeps a family of registers split by legal form: aktiebolagsregistret for limited companies, handelsregistret for partnerships and registered sole traders, föreningsregistret for economic associations and housing cooperatives, and filialregistret for branches of foreign companies. Next to those sit the registers of beneficial owners, business bans, and company mortgages. For the user it looks like one system: one search, one record, one organisation number per entity.

Just as important is what Bolagsverket does not hold. VAT and F-tax registration belong to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), so the company record says nothing about either. Non-profit associations that run no business get their number from Skatteverket, and religious communities without business activity get theirs from Kammarkollegiet. For foundations, Bolagsverket refers you to the county administrative boards (Länsstyrelsen). The industry codes (SNI) in Bolagsverket's free data come from Statistics Sweden (SCB) and do not appear on the record you see in the browser.

The start page of Sök företagsinformation publishes statistics, updated on the first weekday of each month. For September 2026 it counts 5,842 newly registered limited companies.

3. What data is public and what it costs

Sweden runs its register like a shop with a free shop window. The search and the basic record cost nothing, and almost everything behind them is sold per document, with the price shown on the product page before you pay. Purchased company information stays available for 24 hours after you buy it, and documents for five days.

Two things stand out. First, annual accounts are public and cheap. An annual report costs SEK 75 in the e-service, and for Volvo the year selector goes back to 1997. Limited-company reports filed digitally since 2020 come free as iXBRL through the high-value datasets, so you can get those financial statements as data without signing anything. Second, the board is not free. Without logging in, the certificate of registration is the document that shows the representatives and the signing rule: SEK 125 in Swedish. The English version costs twice as much, and its product description no longer mentions the business activities.

What the free record does not show: phone numbers, email addresses, revenue, or employee numbers. Revenue and profit sit inside the filed annual report, which you buy as a PDF or, for limited-company reports filed digitally since 2020, download free as iXBRL. Even the paid selection lists can be cut by county, municipality, postcode, a period such as the registration date, and legal form, but never by industry, number of employees, or turnover. They contain no phone numbers or email addresses either, and Bolagsverket gives the reason: companies are not required to report them.

5. How to verify a Swedish company: a practical checklist

  1. Confirm the organisation number and the record

    Search the number on Sök företagsinformation and check that the name, legal form, and registered office match what you were given. In the results list, closed companies carry a label such as "Company struck off register" or "Dissolved by merger procedure", while Volvo and other active companies show none. For a quick first pass, our free company lookup finds the registration and revenue data in one search.
  2. Check the ongoing cases

    Click the ongoing-case link on the record, or use the Ärende tab. It shows, free, what Bolagsverket is handling for the company and whether an annual report has come in. For Volvo, the list shows the 2026 interim report as received and the 2025 annual report as registered.
  3. Buy the certificate of registration

    Without logging in, the certificate is the document that shows the company's representatives, its signing rule (firmateckning), and its business description. The Swedish version costs SEK 125. It is created with the day's date, so it shows the register as it stands when you buy it.
  4. Check who may sign

    Bolagsverket describes firmateckning as the right to sign in the company's name with legal effect. Compare the person signing your contract with the signing rule on the certificate, and check whether they may sign alone or only together with someone else.
  5. Check that the annual reports arrive on time

    A limited company must get its annual report to Bolagsverket within seven months of the financial year end. If it does not, it pays a late fee, which for financial years starting on or after 1 January 2025 is SEK 7,500 for a private company and SEK 15,000 for a public one, with further fees if the delay continues. If no complete report has arrived within eleven months, the company risks a liquidation order. Buy the latest report at SEK 75 and look at the filing date as well as the figures.
  6. Validate the VAT number separately

    Bolagsverket does not handle VAT, Skatteverket does, so the company record cannot tell you whether a company is VAT-registered. Check the number in the EU's VIES service instead: SE556012579001 returns valid, Aktiebolaget Volvo.

6. Limitations of the official register

To be clear: for a handful of lookups, Bolagsverket is quick and cheap, and its basic data is free in bulk. The limits show up when you need people, structure, or scale:

  • The free record is thin. Name, number, address, registered office, legal form, registration date, and cases. No board, no signatories, no share capital, no industry code.
  • The people sit behind a fee or a login. Persons in the company and who may sign are for logged-in users, and logging in takes an e-legitimation such as Mobilt BankID or Freja+. Without a login, the paid certificate of registration is the way to see them. The person search only takes a personal identity number.
  • Accounts are documents. An annual report is a SEK 75 PDF. Only limited-company reports filed digitally since 2020 come free as iXBRL, so older and paper filings stay PDFs.
  • The free API leaves out the people. The high-value datasets cover basic data, SNI codes, and digitally filed annual reports, at 60 requests a minute per user. For board members, signatories, and other documents by machine, you need the paid API.
  • The full API is a contract. A SEK 5,000 connection fee, a signed agreement, monthly tiers from SEK 1,000 for 500 transactions to SEK 24,000 for 15,000, and document retrieval from SEK 4,000 a month for 100, all excluding VAT.
  • Beneficial ownership is restricted. Since 1 July 2026, access is limited to authorities, businesses with anti-money-laundering obligations, and others who can show a legitimate interest, usually tied to fighting money laundering, terrorist financing, or other crime.
  • No contact data. Not on the free record and not in the selection lists, because companies do not have to report phone numbers or email addresses.
  • One company at a time. The results list has no export. Lists of companies come as paid selection lists, quoted by email, and cannot be filtered by industry, size, or turnover.

If you check one Swedish supplier a quarter, none of this matters. If you onboard hundreds, it is the whole problem.

7. Access Bolagsverket data programmatically

CompanyData maintains a normalized database of all 1,850,173 Swedish entities, sourced directly from Bolagsverket and refreshed as new registrations and filings appear. Records are enriched with revenue, employees, and contact data the free Swedish record does not show.

The Bolagsverket API lets you look up any Swedish entity by organisation number, name, or address and get structured JSON back in real time, with 150 free lookups to start and no connection fee or agreement to sign first. It is part of our global Company Data API, used by developers, banks, and insurers across 190+ countries, so Swedish checks work exactly like checks anywhere else.

Example: look up a company by organisation number

GET /v1/companies?country=SE&registration_id=5560125790

{
  "name": "Aktiebolaget Volvo",
  "legal_form": "Aktiebolag",
  "registration_id": "556012-5790",
  "city": "Göteborg",
  "registration_date": "1915-05-05"
}

Every field above is what the free record for Aktiebolaget Volvo shows on Sök företagsinformation. Revenue, employees, and contact details come back on the same record where we hold them, and are absent here for the reason this guide keeps running into: the free Swedish record does not show them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Sweden Bolagsverket.

Yes. Sök företagsinformation is free and needs no account, and the record shows name, organisation number, address, registered office, legal form, registration date, and ongoing cases. Directors, signatories, and documents cost money: a certificate of registration is SEK 125 and an annual report SEK 75. Basic company data and limited-company annual reports filed digitally since 2020 are free in bulk.
Ten digits, written as six digits, a hyphen, and four digits, for example Volvo's 556012-5790. The first digit hints at the legal form: 5 for limited companies, branches, banks, and insurers, 9 for trading and limited partnerships, 7 or 8 for associations, and 3 for foreign companies. Bolagsverket warns that you cannot be fully certain of the form from the number alone. Sole traders use their personal identity number instead.
Not quite. Volvo's VAT number, SE556012579001, is its organisation number with SE in front and 01 behind, and it validates in the EU's VIES service. But VAT registration is handled by Skatteverket, not Bolagsverket, so the company record does not tell you whether a company is registered for VAT. Check that in VIES.
Not from the free record. The quickest route is to buy the certificate of registration for SEK 125, which lists the representatives and the signing rule. Alternatively, log in with an e-legitimation such as Mobilt BankID or Freja+ and buy the information about persons in the company. The Person tab takes a personal identity number, not a name.
Yes. Filed annual reports can be bought on Sök företagsinformation for SEK 75 each as a PDF, and for a long-registered company like Volvo the year selector goes back to 1997. Limited-company annual reports filed digitally since 2020 are free from Bolagsverket as weekly iXBRL files and through its high-value datasets API. For statements at scale, see our Swedish company records with financials.
Yes, two. The API for high-value datasets (värdefulla datamängder) is free and needs no contract, only a customer registration to get credentials. It returns basic company data, SNI codes, and digitally filed annual reports, at 60 requests a minute. The full API för att hämta företagsinformation adds persons, signatories, and documents, but requires an agreement, a SEK 5,000 connection fee, and a monthly tier from SEK 1,000 for 500 transactions, excluding VAT. For immediate structured access, use our Bolagsverket API.
Yes. Sök företagsinformation has an English version, called Find company information, that translates the labels, buttons, and status texts. The content stays Swedish: legal forms read Aktiebolag, municipalities and counties keep their Swedish names, and annual reports, articles of association, and minutes are in Swedish. Certificates of registration can be bought in English for SEK 250.
Non-profit associations that run no business get their number from Skatteverket, religious communities without business activity from Kammarkollegiet, and state agencies from Statistics Sweden. For foundations, Bolagsverket refers you to the county administrative boards. Sole traders only appear if they chose to register a business name, although larger ones must register.
A limited company must get its annual report to Bolagsverket within seven months of the financial year end to avoid a late fee. For financial years starting on or after 1 January 2025, the first fee is SEK 7,500 for a private company and SEK 15,000 for a public one. If no complete report has arrived within eleven months, the company risks a liquidation order. Trading partnerships only have to file if a legal person is a partner or the partnership counts as a larger company.
Since 1 July 2026, only if you belong to one of the three groups Bolagsverket serves: authorities, businesses that must check beneficial owners under the anti-money-laundering rules, and others such as journalists, researchers, and civil-society organisations that can show a legitimate interest, usually tied to fighting money laundering or other crime. For that last group, access is limited, paid, and tied to specific cases or companies.
