1. What is the Italian company register?
Until 1993 Italian company records lived on paper in the record offices of the commercial courts. A reform that year moved the whole thing to the Chambers of Commerce, who were told to run it in fully computerised form so that information would be available immediately across the country. That register is the Registro Imprese, and the reform is why Italian company data is unusually complete and unusually centralised for a country with twenty regions.
Each local Chamber keeps its own business register office, supervised by a Conservatore, typically the Chamber's Secretary General, and by a judge delegated by the president of the competent court, who checks that registrations are formally correct. The Ministry provides administrative oversight. The technology underneath is run by InfoCamere, a consortium of the Chambers of Commerce constituted as a public limited company, which is why every official Italian company page you land on carries an InfoCamere footer.
The register does two jobs at once, and the distinction matters when you are relying on it. Legal publicity under Article 2193 of the Civil Code means a registered fact can be held against third parties, and that a company cannot rely on a fact it failed to register. Economic reporting means the same database also feeds national statistics. Alongside the register sits the REA, the economic and administrative repertory, which carries the operational detail: activity, local units, technical managers, and cessation of activity.
| System | What it holds | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Registro Imprese registroimprese.it | Company name, registered office, VAT number, activity and legal form, governing bodies, capital, legal representatives and their powers, branches | Basic data free, official documents paid |
| Document file (fascicolo) registroimprese.it | Full financial statements, instruments of incorporation, lists of shareholders, and the rest of the filed paperwork | Paid, from EUR 2.50 per document |
| REA Repertorio Economico Amministrativo | Economic, statistical and administrative detail: main activity, local units, technical managers, changes and cessation of activity | Included in the register data |
2. How to search the Registro Imprese step by step
Searching and seeing the basic record costs nothing and needs no account. Everything official, meaning anything you could hand to a bank or put in a file, is paid and priced per document.
Open registroimprese.it
The search box takes a company name or an activity, with a province dropdown next to it that defaults to the whole of Italy. Narrow by province only when you are sure which one the registered office is in.
The search on registroimprese.it. One field for the company name or activity, one province selector, and a direct route into visure, bilanci, and fascicoli. Expect long registered names
Italian companies register their full statutory name, which is often a paragraph. Ferrari is registered as "Ferrari-Società Per Azioni Esercizio Fabbriche Automobili E Corse O Semplicemente: Ferrari S.p.A.". The short form after "o semplicemente" is part of the registered name, so searching either version works.Open the company record
The free view gives you the registered name, the address of the registered office, the certified email address, the generic legal form, and the activity description. That last field is free text written for the register, not an industry code.
The record for Ferrari S.p.A. in Modena. Free data on the left, and the official price list on the right: visura ordinaria EUR 5.00 through to fascicolo storico EUR 11.00. Pick the right paid document
The panel on the right lists them with prices. A visura ordinaria is the current register extract, a visura storica adds the history, a fascicolo is the full document file, and ultimo bilancio is the most recent filed accounts.Take the English visura if you need one
Italy sells an official English-language company extract, the visura d'impresa in inglese, at the same EUR 5.00 as the Italian one. Very few European registers offer a certified translation at all, let alone at the same price.
3. What data is public and what it costs
Access to the register and to a limited amount of information is free of charge. Complete information is available only against payment. The prices are published on every company page, so you always know the cost before you commit.
| Item | Free or paid | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Company search by name, activity, or province | Free | EUR 0, no account |
| Basic record: name, address, PEC, legal form, activity | Free | EUR 0, shown on screen |
| Visura ordinaria (current extract) | Paid | EUR 5.00 |
| Visura d'impresa in inglese (official English extract) | Paid | EUR 5.00 |
| Visura storica (extract with history) | Paid | EUR 6.00 |
| Fascicolo (full document file) | Paid | EUR 10.00 |
| Fascicolo storico (historical document file) | Paid | EUR 11.00 |
| Ultimo bilancio (latest filed accounts) | Paid | EUR 2.50 |
| InfoCamere web service (API) | Paid | Commercial contract, price not published |
The standout here is the bilancio at EUR 2.50. Italian companies file real financial statements into the register, and anyone can buy the latest set for the price of a coffee. Combined with the EUR 10.00 fascicolo, which brings the shareholder lists and the instrument of incorporation with it, a complete picture of an Italian counterparty costs well under twenty euro.
What the register does not give you in any form: employee counts, and an industry code you can filter on. The activity field is free text written by whoever filed it, which for Ferrari runs to several lines describing the design, testing, production, and sale of motor vehicles and the exercise of sporting activity in the automotive field. Useful to read, impossible to aggregate.
4. Italian legal forms, briefly
Italy is one of the few registers with a genuine internal division, and knowing which side a company sits on tells you what obligations it carries. The sezione ordinaria holds commercial businesses proper. The sezioni speciali hold everything registered by virtue of a qualification instead: agricultural, small, artisan, professional, or innovative.
| Form | Italian name | Register section | In short |
|---|---|---|---|
| S.p.A. | Società per azioni | Ordinaria | Stock corporation. Ferrari, Enel, Eni, and Intesa Sanpaolo are all S.p.A. |
| S.r.l. | Società a responsabilità limitata | Ordinaria | The private limited company and the default choice for most businesses. |
| S.n.c. | Società in nome collettivo | Ordinaria | General partnership. Every partner is liable without limit. |
| S.a.s. | Società in accomandita semplice | Ordinaria | Limited partnership. Managing partners liable without limit, the rest to their stake. |
| Cooperativa | Società cooperativa | Ordinaria | Cooperatives, alongside consortia with external activity and consortium companies. |
| Impresa individuale | Imprenditore commerciale | Ordinaria | A sole trader carrying on commercial activity above the small-business threshold. |
| Società semplice | Società semplice | Speciale | The simplest partnership form, for non-commercial activity. |
| Impresa agricola | Imprenditore agricolo, coltivatore diretto | Speciale | Farms and direct cultivators, registered by qualification. |
| Impresa artigiana | Impresa artigiana | Speciale | Craft businesses, annotated as such in the special section. |
| Startup innovativa | Startup innovativa, PMI innovativa, impresa sociale | Speciale | Special regimes with their own reporting duties and their own dedicated sections. |
Almost every document behind these entries is drawn up by a notary, and since 2007 all enterprises, sole traders included, file with the register electronically using a digital signature. Italy got rid of paper filings earlier and more completely than most of Europe.
5. How to verify an Italian company: a practical checklist
Match on the codice fiscale, not the REA number
Take the Registro Imprese number, which is the codice fiscale, and confirm it against the name and registered office on the free record. If you were given a REA number instead, treat it as a pointer to one province rather than as the company key. For a quick first pass, our free company lookup finds the registration and revenue data in one search.Buy the visura ordinaria
At EUR 5.00 this is the document that actually proves something. It carries the governing bodies, the share capital, the legal representatives, and crucially their powers of representation, none of which appear in the free view.Read the powers, not just the names
Italian records spell out what each representative may do and up to what limit. A named amministratore is not automatically able to bind the company for the contract in front of you. This is the single most valuable field in the visura.Check the register section
A company in a sezione speciale carries different obligations from one in the sezione ordinaria, including whether it must file accounts at all. If you were expecting financial statements and there are none, the section usually explains why.Buy the latest bilancio
EUR 2.50 for the most recent filed accounts. Check the filing date as well as the numbers, and compare the financial year end against the date you are looking at it.Take the fascicolo for anything material
EUR 10.00 brings the shareholder list and the instrument of incorporation. For a deal of any size, knowing who actually owns the counterparty is worth ten euro.
6. Limitations of the official register
To be clear: per document, the Registro Imprese is one of the best value registers in Europe. The limits are about shape and scale, not about quality:
- Nothing meaningful is free. The free view confirms a company exists. Every fact you would actually rely on, from directors to capital to accounts, sits behind a payment.
- The REA number is provincial and plural. One company can hold several. Any pipeline that keys on it will double-count, and it is the number most often quoted on Italian paperwork.
- No industry code you can filter on. The activity field is free text written by the filer, sometimes running to several lines of prose.
- No employee counts. They are not a register field, in the free view or the paid extract.
- Everything is a PDF. Visure, bilanci, and fascicoli all arrive as documents. Turning a year of Italian filings into data means parsing thousands of them.
- The API is a sales conversation. InfoCamere does publish an official web service, but access runs through a consultant and a commercial contract rather than a signup form, and no price is published.
- Telemaco needs an Italian identity. The professional channel signs you in with InfoCamere credentials, SPID, CIE, or a CNS token, none of which a foreign company will have to hand.
If you check one Italian supplier a quarter, none of this matters. If you onboard hundreds, it is the whole problem.
7. Access Registro Imprese data programmatically
CompanyData maintains a normalized database of all 7,003,310 Italian businesses, sourced directly from the Registro Imprese and refreshed as new filings appear. The codice fiscale is used as the company key and provincial REA numbers are attached to it rather than treated as separate entities, filed bilanci are parsed into structured financial fields, the free-text activity description is mapped onto standard industry codes, and records are enriched with employees and contact data the register does not hold.
Our Company Data API lets you look up any Italian business by codice fiscale, VAT number, name, or address and get structured JSON back in real time, with 150 free lookups to start and no commercial contract to negotiate first. It is used by developers, banks, and insurers across 190+ countries, so Italian checks work exactly like checks anywhere else.
Example: look up a company by name
GET /v1/companies?country=IT&name=Ferrari%20S.p.A.
{
"name": "Ferrari S.p.A.",
"legal_form": "Societa per azioni",
"city": "Modena",
"province": "MO",
"address": "Via Emilia Est 1163",
"registered_office": "Modena",
"status": "active"
}Every field above is what the free record on registroimprese.it shows. The codice fiscale, the governing bodies, the share capital, and the filed accounts come back on the same record, and are the fields Italy puts behind a payment.
